Esteban Armenta, in Concheros, Gran Show de Primavera 2012

We are Austin High’s Ballet Folklórico, a for-credit dance program at S.F. Austin High School in Austin, TX. We proudly represent our art, culture and school in dozens of performances throughout the community each year. We also travel to compete and to learn how to improve both our craft and ourselves.

We are under the direction of Maura Masters and the leadership of student officers who assist in the management, artistic direction and instruction of our program. Felipe Hernandez, a former dance captain, joins us this year to provide instructional and choreography support.

We are largely self-funded and raise money to purchase costumes, pay for professional choreography, lighting, travel and competition fees primarily through performances and related fundraisers.

In addition to four major annual performances at S.F. Austin High School, we perform at private functions, including quinceñeras, weddings and corporate functions. We have also danced at the Texas State Capitol, the Mexican-American Cultural Center, the Dell Children’s Medical Center and at various area schools and universities.

What is Ballet Folklorico?

Ballet Folklorico represents a vast array of regional Mexican dances, which have been formally codified and merged with classical ballet technique. The culture and history of each region is reflected in its dance style, steps, music and costumes, making ballet folklorico not only visually beautiful, but also a unique window into Mexico itself.
